Many of us know Ron Howard as Opie on Andy of Mayberry. Even more as Richie Cunningham on Happy Days. But today is he is Oscar-winning director of such movies as Apollo 13, (which was nominated for nine Academy Awards and won two), and A Beautiful Mind, for which he won Best Director.
Howard and his wife Cheryl also run the Ron and Cheryl Howard Family Foundation, which support numerous causes, including arts and culture (NYU Tisch School of the Arts, Tribeca Film Institute, Bruce Museum in Greenwich, Connecticut, and Jacob Burns Film Center (JBFC) in Westchester County, New York), NPR and PEN. They support microfinance in developing countries, Happy Books Zimbabwe, Central Africa Building Society, a building society in Zimbabwe, the Fistula Foundation, which funds obstetric fistula treatment in Africa and Asia, and more.
