1989 – His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Tibetan spiritual leader
His Holiness The 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso is the traditional political and spiritual leader of the Tibetan people. He was recognized at the age of two, in accordance with Tibetan tradition, as the reincarnation of his predecessor the 13th Dalai Lama, and thus an incarnation of the Buddha of Compassion.
In 1959, nine years after the Chinese invasion of Tibet, the Dalai Lama fled to Dharamsala, India, where he lives today as the leader of the Tibetan Government in Exile. He travels the world teaching Tibetan Buddhism’s central tenet of compassion. He is one of the most loved and respected religious figures in the world.
